Goodyear Sale Tire

Goodyear tire co., in cooperation with Geneco, has manufactured tires using rubber ultimately derived from trees. While most of the transportation sector has been focused on renewable energy for use in combustion engines, these innovators have sought out a replacement for crude in the manufacture of rubber goods.

The Key Ingredient

Isoprene is a raw liquid material derived from petroleum, and used in the manufacture of rubber goods – primarily tires. By using bacteria for a useful purpose, Genecor uses E. coli to break down sugars extracted from plant material. The by-product of this conversion then generates natural isoprene. Corn, switch grass, and other rapidly renewable crops, provide the feedstock used for this development.
