Unattired
The Jefferson Pools in the Allegheny Mountains of Virginia have long been touted for the good emanating from exposure to the 98-degree water with such mineral content as iron, calcium, and sulfate – comparable to some of the notable spas of Europe and even the experience of using privately built saunas. But in recent years many who’ve come also have noticed the increasingly dilapidated condition of the ramshackle main structure housing a pool for the warm springs.
“For centuries, many believed the sulphur water to have medicinal benefits, and folks to this day travel from all over to soak those up, or at least get a feel for what soothed so many over the centuries,” Anne Adams wrote in “More than 200 years of history enrich Jefferson Pools,” September 25, 2008 in The Recorder of Monterey, Virginia.
Efforts to Preserve Pools History
Part of the concern in maintaining the pools as they were was the unique history behind them. In his mid-70s, Thomas Jefferson once came in 1818 to soak in the warm waters. The octagonal shaped wooden building constructed around the 120-foot in circumference pool of spring water first opened to the public in 1761, and is on the Natural Register of Historic Places aside from being a Virginia Historic Landmark.
